EIGHTH GENERATION

141. Edward BOWLBY (746)(6) (7)(8) was born in 1721.(747) He was in England when he signed the power of attorney for Thomas Bowlby(7) to dispose of the lands in New Jersey which was dated 23 June 1743. Edward "Bolby" posted a stray at Hanover Township, Morris County, New Jersey on 31 December 1744. This indicates that he probably came to America the same year Thomas (7) arrived, and that he settled near George (7). The following appears in the resurvey of land for John Bowlby (7) in 1765: "And Lest any doubt Should arise Whether Edward Bowlby aforesaid Son of Jordan Bowlby (which Jordan Bowlby was Eldest son of Thomas Bowlby the father aforesaid) has not a Legal Claim in the lands Released as aforesaid which has not been by him Transferred. He the said John Bowlby by a certain Instrument dated the twelveth day of September, 1760 and Likewise by another Instrument dated Sixteenth day of May 1761 Obtained from the said Edward a Release of all his Right in the Lands Released as aforesaid to him the said John Bowlby." Furthermore, his uncle John's will of 1779 includes the following bequest: "...unto my nefue Edward Bowlby Sun of my Brother girdon Bowlby the Sum of five chiling..." Five shillings was a minimum, nominal payment used to cut a person out of any further inheritance. Apparently Edward was never satisfied with the land he received from his grandfather's estate. Edward is said to have had a son, Jordan and may have had another, Edward G.A.

Edward BOWLBY had the following children:

It was reported by William J. Hill, a family researcher, that Jordan
was the son of Edward Bowlby. Jordan also appears as Edward's son on
a chart of the first four generation of the Bowlby family in America
which was drawn in the early 1900's by William A. Reeves, another
family researcher who lived in Clinton, New Jersey. This is
apparently the Jordan who apparently wrote a letter dated 26 April
1766, to his grand uncle, Thomas (7), inquiring about the disposition
of Samuel Barker's lands.
